Life is full of rules and laws to abide to. Society requires these to insure order is maintained and anarchy and chaos do not reign. Where there are no laws, oppression and death are a part of everyday life. Just look to Syria and some of the nations of Africa.
God rescued His people from slavery in Egypt. This was 400 years after He had grown tired of His chosen people following other gods. He left them to fend for themselves in Egypt and without protection they became enslaved to Pharaoh.
Once freed, God placed in stone His ten laws for living in harmony with Him and our fellow brothers and sisters. 10 simple principles to live by to insure life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Our forefathers taught us these laws and erected facsimiles all over the U.S. Over 3,000 years since they were handed down from God, we have seen the removal of these landmarks from state and federal buildings, libraries and other public gathering spots. Unfortunate as the Bible states
2 Chronicles
For a long time Israel has been without the true God, without a teaching priest, and without law;
It continues in verse 5
And in those times there was no peace to the one who went out, nor to the one who came in, but great turmoil was on all the inhabitants of the lands. 6 So nation was destroyed by nation, and city by city, for God troubled them with every adversity. 7 But you, be strong and do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded!”
So the equation is
Adherence to 10 Commandments = Peace
rejection of 10 Commandments = Destruction
Simple right? Why can't we get this? Jesus came down almost 2,000 years ago and simplified it even further. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and love others as yourself. Can't get any simpler than that and yet we still rebel.
For those of you lawbreakers, the Bible spells out a way to live without the law if you so choose. Here it is in Galatians 5:
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
So there it is live with love, joy, faithfulness, etc and you do not have to worry about the Big 10, the simplified 2 or any other laws for that matter because through these traits you already exude that which God wishes us to become.
